About the course

This programme offers the double opportunity of gaining an undergraduate Masters degree in Physics and achieving qualified teacher status (QTS). You’ll pursue your subject specialism in greater depth than in the BSc Honours programme, with the Masters stage (fourth year) fulfilling the educational requirements for Chartered Physicist status. With sufficient work experience after graduation you will be eligible for this important professional recognition from the Institute of Physics.

The school-based experience element of the course includes no fewer than 120 days in school, both at primary and secondary level. Your training encompasses learning and teaching methods, demonstrating physics and maths concepts to aid understanding, conducting experiments and enabling students to solve problems.

In the physics programme you will study advanced topics such as numerical and computational physics, matter at extremes of high and low temperature and physics in technology, and you will undertake an advanced project designed to develop your experimental skills. In your final (Masters) year, the modules are strongly connected to research in the department, examples of which include quantum technologies, nanotechnology and nano-photonics, and lasers and their applications.

As a graduate of MPhys Physics with QTS, you will be fully prepared for a career in teaching, with the skills to spark a life-long interest in physics amongst young people.

Future prospects

MPhys Physics with QTS develops the skills and knowledge required of a specialist physics teacher at secondary level, through a combination of taught modules and teaching experience within a school.

The Institute of Physics places a great deal of emphasis on employability skills and we have included subject-specific skills, like problem solving, computer programming and experimental skills, and more general skills such as group and teamwork and the ability to communicate in writing and orally within various modules. We also have a member of staff dedicated to employability, who stages a number of extra-curricular activities to help you to build up your portfolio of activities during their course, for later use in compiling a CV and seeking your first career position.
