About the course

A specialised and unique 4-year degree with a 12-month placement in Westminster, this is an intellectually demanding programme through which you’ll gain an in-depth understanding of British politics and parliamentary procedures and behaviours.  Our research helps to bring our teaching to life, and integrating the two enables us to create an academic community which embraces everyone from the most senior professors to first-year undergraduates. What distinguishes politics at Hull is the opportunity to apply your studies in and to the real world, and nowhere is this more true than during the third year of this degree when you’ll get unparalleled access to the Houses of Parliament and the internal mechanisms of British democracy while working alongside an MP or peer.

The large pool of MPs engaged with our programme means that we're likely to be able to match you with a politician whose role reflects your area of political interest.  Studying this course opens doors of opportunity to those considering a career in Parliament. Our graduates are well known throughout the major UK political parties and institutions. In fact, we have so many graduates now working in Westminster that they've affectionately become known as 'the Hull Mafia'.

Future prospects

So many of our graduates are now working within the political arena in Westminster or Whitehall that they affectionately are known as the 'Hull Mafia'.  Beyond these confines, the degree has also led graduates into careers in political consultancy, the media, public relations, the private commercial charitable sectors; and  international organisations. Posts held by graduates from this degree currently include: Manager of Government and Parliamentary Business, Ofcom; Deputy Mayor for Housing, Land and Property, Greater London Authority; Special Advisor, Department for Transport; Member of Parliament; Senior Legislation Manager, Department of Health; Senior Parliamentary Adviser, Historic England; and Assistant Director, Head of Public Affairs and Public Policy, The Royal British Legion.  In addition, many graduates have gone on to study at Masters and Doctoral level, and/or to pursue successful academic careers.

We like to keep in touch with our graduates and do so by facilitating the Graduates’ Association. Members are notified of interesting news and events occurring in the world of Politics as well as receiving an annual copy of the Graduate Directory, which is an excellent tool for networking, particularly in the early stages of your career.  As a graduate you will also have access to the University Careers Service, which will provide a wealth of advice, information and guidance to help ready you for the world of work.
