Scholarships 2017
32 funded PhD scholarships available for 2017 entry

Without quality researchers, there can be no quality research.

This is why the University of Hull is investing £3million into 32 PhD scholarships to attract the best academic talent and further our research endeavours. Many projects are interdisciplinary and/or in collaboration with industry.

If you choose to carry out your postgraduate studies with us, you will become part of a vibrant, forward-thinking research community.

We have specific opportunities in areas as diverse as wound care development; the evolution of parental care in animals; approaches to Big Data; contemporary slavery; and the impact of exercise on cardiovascular health – among others.

Our postgraduate students are a well-integrated and fundamental part of our research and contribute a great deal to the shaping of the Faculty. We pride ourselves on supporting them and ensuring that they achieve their full potential. In addition to their own research, all PhD students at the University of Hull also complete the Postgraduate Training Scheme.

If you have the drive and passion to break new knowledge barriers, now is the time to take your chance.

Not ready to start this September?

Evolution of Parental Care in Animals

To celebrate the University's research successes, the University of Hull is offering a full-time UK/EU PhD Scholarship or International Fees Bursary for candidates applying for each of the following projects.

Nature-Inspired Algorithms, Computational Approaches and Software Development for Big Data Applications

The University of Hull invites applications for four fully-funded PhD scholarships in the area of Natural Computation and Big Data. Particular areas of interest are evolutionary algorithms, deep learning, natural language processing and the Internet of Things.

We are looking to recruit a team of four PhD students that look at complementary areas of research in natural computation and Big Data. The successful candidates will commence their studies within the School of Engineering and Computer Science and the newly founded Digital Centre at the University of Hull. Students will be based in a shared lab space to create an inspiring and collaborative work environment. Our research will make use of the University’s new High-Performance Computing facility Viper, which is equipped with state of the art equipment for parallel processing, high-memory computation and GPUs, and is ranked amongst the top 7 in the North of England.

Advanced Wound Care: From Novel Therapies to Clinical Trials

To celebrate the University's research successes, the University of Hull is offering a full-time UK/EU PhD Scholarship or International Fees Bursary for candidates applying for the following projects, except 3., which is for UK & EU students only and is a four-year project, funded by Smith and Nephew.

Wounds that fail to heal are a worldwide unmet clinical need. Current therapies are often ineffective, largely because not enough is known about how wounds normally heal or what goes wrong in pathological wounds, such as leg ulcers or pressure sores.

To address this problem, the University of Hull, in partnership with the locally-based global leader in Advanced Wound Management, Smith and Nephew, have established the Hull PhD Cluster for Advanced Wound Care. A total of 7 multi-disciplinary PhD studentships are available to start in Sept 2017.

Modern Slavery, Migration and Surveillance

The Wilberforce Institute for the Study of Slavery and Emancipation and the Centre for Criminology and Criminal Justice at the University of Hull offer two distinct PhD scholarships within the broader interdisciplinary areas of modern slavery, migration and surveillance.

Cardiovascular Health; maximising the key psychological and biochemical effects of exercise and other novel interventions in atherosclerosis

To celebrate the University's research successes, the University of Hull is offering a full-time UK/EU PhD Scholarship or International Fees Bursary for candidates applying for each of the following projects in the Hull York Medical School.

Every year in the UK, cardiovascular disease (CVD) kills over 160,000 individuals (including 40,000 premature deaths) and accounts for 16.2% of all hospital admissions.  Yorkshire and the Humber has one of highest age-standardised CVD death rates in the UK.

All students will join a vibrant community of current PhD students/fellows. The current seminar programme encourages interaction between doctoral students, research associates and fellows. HYMS registered students also have access to the research training modules provided by the Universities of both Hull and York.

Improving symptoms, outcomes and access to care for those with advanced progressive long term conditions, multi-morbidity and frailty within primary care

To celebrate the University's research successes, the University of Hull is offering a full-time UK/EU PhD Scholarship or International Fees Bursary for candidates applying for each of the following projects in the Hull York Medical School.

In the UK the proportion of older people is growing, with an increase in long-term conditions, often with several together (multi-morbidity) and frailty. This brings a corresponding increase in related symptoms for the person concerned and a direct impact on healthcare resource use.

The following PhD projects are in response to this need and aim to improve our understanding with regard to identification and management of symptoms in primary care in people living in the community. All will work with, in addition to their supervisors, a research associate working on a community based cohort of patients with chronic medical conditions.
